Case Study: The Cambridge Satchel Company

November 17, 20222 min read

In Julie Deane's own words....

"The Cambridge Satchel Company was born to fulfill a need, I needed to make enough money to pay for my children to go to a great school,

I needed to make my children’s lives better and I had a limited budget with which to do it: £600”.

Back in 2007, Julie Deane’s daughter was being bullied at school. As a mother, things needed to change.

In total she needed to raise £24,000 a year to enable her daughter and son the life she wanted for them.

She had a mission that drove her with passion.

She trusted her gut, used her intuition and from her kitchen table grew a business that now has it’s product sold in over 120 countries.

Starting with a satchel because she couldn't find a sturdy, well made one for herself.

In her own words “ We make fantastic products, our craftsmanship is superb, we only work with people we admire, sell to shops we are proud to be in and speak to our customers in plain English with a twinkle in our eye.

We have fun, we do things differently and we don’t follow the rules".

This is why I rate her because quite frankly, who doesn’t like a twinkle in their eye?!

And also, she started off with £600.

It’s more than this for me though.

On April 27, 2020, I emailed Julie Deane asking if I could interview her for a book I was writing about around what to consider when starting a  business and the key things you need to know.

In the height of the pandemic at 10.01pm on 27th April, she herself wrote back to me in answer to my request to a generic email, finishing her email with ‘I wish you every success and hope you and your family are safe and sound’.

I strongly believe that the reason behind why a business comes into fruition factors into it’s success. The more it matters and the more passion there is, the greater the chance that people will get it.

This.Is.It

You are your business.

You are the expert.

Make your own rules.

Julie’s passion drove the Cambridge Satchel Company.

What is doing it for you?
